Available September 1st: MY FIST IS A BOOK OF ETHICS

#MFIABOE cover

MY FIST IS A BOOK OF ETHICS, my first collection of original poems, will be available for purchase (here) beginning September 1st!

The collection, which was mostly penned in the spring and summer of 2013, contains twenty one poems, and is printed in ‘zine format.

Taken as a collection, the poems are for the most part oriented towards themselves – that is, they have poetry as their object, or are *about* poetry. The ethical import, as suggested by the title, is that this poetry-being-about-itself exists as something like an ethical imperative: poetry should be about itself.  At least poetry now (though it seems to me that all ethical claims re an art form should be both reiterated and understood  as being situated in its moment). The “fist” part of the title is meant to call attention to the collection’s moments of viscerality and the occasional allusions to “the concrete.” These moments echo my desire that the work, as something that has taken *itself* as an object, and that relentlessly questions its place in the world, at least attempts to do something like “get beyond” the quandary of language that is *about* something, as opposed to doing something like *being* that thing.  The question of art and politics – whether or not a poem can be like a stone thrown at a tank – here wants to be read by omitting the simile: instead of being *like* a stone, it wants to be the stone.
